A Yellowfin Tuna Paradise
Costa Rica may be best known for our abundant bill fishing, but another species has been surging in popularity: Yellowfin Tuna. We love fishing for Yellowfin for a few reasons.
First, Yellowfin has become more accessible and easier to find in the waters offshore of Los Sueños. The Costa Rican government has recently passed new legislation to help foster the waters of our coast to become even more conducive to Yellowfin. We support many of these conservation efforts - from a practical standpoint, we want to preserve as much as we can for sportfishing. Additionally, Yellowfin is listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as a species of least concern - meaning that we are not in danger of overfishing Yellowfin.
Another significant advantage of this legislation is that it helps to protect the other species we enjoy fishing for at Maverick Costa Rica, including Marlin, Sailfish, Dorado, and Wahoo. By pushing commercial fishing further offshore, these efforts help to reduce bycatch. Many commercial fishing operations target tuna but often "bycatch" these other species. Additionally, these efforts help to reduce the bycatch of turtles and dolphins - so it's a win-win for anglers and the overall health of our waters.
Yellowfin is also a thrill to catch. They put up just enough fight to keep you coming back for more. While they can be smaller in size, don't be deceived. These guys are well-known to be powerhouses and are extremely fast. It can take anywhere from 30 minutes to three hours to land, which can test even experienced anglers.
And best of all, they are one of the best-tasting fish you can find in Costa Rica - or anywhere else for that matter. Everyone loves Yellowfin (also known as Ahi on many menus), and it has become the star of numerous seafood restaurants globally. One of the best parts of targeting Yellowfin Tuna at Maverick Costa Rica is that you can do so with the guilt-free intent to consume. Because of their status, these fish are perfect for this, and if you're interested, we can even help arrange a chef-prepared meal with your catch when you get back into Los Sueños.
