Employee Spotlight: Captain Carlos “Pollo” Espinoza

This month, we’re featuring Carlos “Pollo” Espinoza, the captain of Sea Fly. Learn about some of his favorite experiences at Maverick, plus his favorite fish to catch!

How long have you been with Maverick Costa Rica? 

I have been with Maverick since the very beginning. I worked for founder Richard Lebo (Bimi) before starting this project.

How long have you been a captain?

About 8 years.

What is your favorite part of the boat you are a captain of: Sea Fly?

I don't have a favorite part, it’s all so great! But I like to be where the action happens; the adrenaline rush of seeing a fish coming in is unbeatable.

What is your favorite fish to catch?

That’s a hard question to answer in my line of work. If I had to choose, my favorite fish to catch is the Black marlin because of the challenge to catch them and how awesome they are.

Do you have a favorite experience as a captain?

So many great moments - so many days with big catches. I remember a day at the Seamounts when we had six blue marlins hooked and released four.

Tell us about your family. Are you married? Do you have children?

I have a growing family! I have been married for 14 years to my wife, Kimberlyn, and we have 4 children: Joseph (13), Abigail (6), Luz and Lia (8 month-old twins).

Outside of fishing, what is the #1 thing guests should do while they are in Costa Rica?

Enjoy our incredible nature, see a wonderful sunset or have a coffee when is raining somewhere in the rainforest or cloud forest.
